January
- January 10- The NYSE Group signed a definitive agreement that would give them five percent equity in the National Stock Exchange located in Mumbai, India. The five percent equity position is the maximum amount a foreign investor is permitted to take under India's law.[1]
- January 12- CBOE sold a seat at an all-time high price of $1.9 million. This surpassed the previous record of $1.8 million which was set on Jan. 10, 2007. [2]
- January 25 - The CBOE Stock Exchange named David Harris president of the CBOE Stock Exchange.[3]
- January 31 - President George W. Bush visits the New York Stock Exchange. He is the second sitting president to visit the exchange during trading hours.[4]
February
- February 9 - The NYSE Group saw record-breaking volume with their new trading platform, NYSE Arca Options, when 541,442 electronic options contracts were traded. This surpassed the previous record of 467,477 contracts traded on Jan. 19, 2007.[5]
- February 15 - Peter J. Layton joined the Boston Options Exchange as Chairman of the Board. [6]
- February 21 - Quarterly Standard & Poor's 500 Index options, Quarterly Mini-SPX Index options and Quarterly Standard & Poor's 100 Index with European-style exercise options were launched at the Chicago Board Options Exchange.[7]
- February 22 - Navios Martime Holdings, a global leader in seaborne shipping, transferred their listing from Nasdaq to the NYSE Group.[8]
- February 26 - Duncan L. Niederauer was appointed president and co-chief operating officer of the NYSE Group, beginning Apr. 9, 2007.[9]
- February 27 - The CBOE had their busiest trading day in their history as 6,722,060 contracts were traded, which surpassed the previous high of 5,816,336 contracts traded on May 19, 2006.[10]
- February 27 - The New York Stock Exchange sees it's largest trading volume ever with 4,121,107,134 contracts changing hands. [11]
March
- March 5 - The CBOE Stock Exchange a subsidiary of CBOE, opened for trading with volume totaling more than 682,000 shares.[12]
- March 8 - Volume in options on the CBOE Volatility Index hit record levels with 230,847 contracts traded, surpassing the previous record of 162,856 contracts traded on Aug. 14, 2006.[13]
- March 14 - Volume in options at the Chicago Board Options Exchange on the S&P 500 Index reached a reported 1,832,917 contracts. This surpassed the previous high of 1,287,151 contracts traded on May 19, 2006.[14]
- March 23 - The NYSE Group received approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission to move forward with NYSE Bonds, an electronic trading platform for fixed income. The platform was launched on Apr. 23. [15]
April
- April 4 - The NYSE Group and the pan-European Euronext exchange merged creating NYSE Euronext.[16]
- April 23 - NYSE Bonds, an electronic platform for fixed-income trading began operating at NYSE Euronext.[17]
- April 25 - NYSE Euronext launched NYSE TransactTools which enabled traders to better access global liquidity.[18]
- April 25 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit over 13,000 points for the first time. [19]
- April 30 - NYSE Group listed Van Eck Global's Market Vectors, which was the first Russian exchange-traded fund to be listed in the United States. It was designed to track the price and yield performance of the DAXglobal Russia + Index (DXRPUS).[20]
- April 30 - The International Securities Exchange announced their plans to merge with Eurex.
May
- May 10 - The CBOE Futures Exchange set a new single-day trading record with volume totaling 12,351 contracts traded. This was the busiest day in the exchange's three-year history. It exceeded it's previous high of 10,846 contracts traded on Oct. 10, 2006.[21]
- May 10 - The CBOE's Volatility Index set a single-day volume record when 12,012 contracts were traded which surpassed the previous record of 10,673 contracts traded on Oct. 10, 2006.[22]
- May 16 - Volume in options on the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), totaled 274,360 contracts today beating the previous single-day volume record of 208,872 contracts set on March 8, 2007. [23]
- May 28 - The Dubai Mercantile Exchange, the joint venture between Dubai Holding and the New York Mercantile Exchange, concluded a transaction giving the Oman Investment Fund a 30 percent stake in the Exchange. [25]
- May 30 - The Chicago Board Options Exchange announced two seats, or memberships, traded for new all-time highs today at a price of $2,445,000 and then, a second CBOE seat traded for a price of $2,500,000. Both trades topped the previous high of $2,400,000 for a CBOE seat, which was set on April 30, 2007. [26]
- May 31 - Citi acquired a minority stake in BATS Trading. [27]
June
- June 1 - The Dubai Mercantile Exchange began trading energy futures and commodities. [28]
- June 5- The CBOE announced that a seat traded at an all-time high today at $2,550,000, which surpassed the previous high of $2,500,000 set on May 30, 2007.[29]
- June 19 - Credit Event Binary Options also known as credit default options, were launched at the Chicago Board Options Exchange on five individual companies: General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Lear Corporation, Hovnanian Enterprises, Inc. and Standard Pacific Corporation. [30]
- June 27 - Walter Lukken was appointed Acting Chairman of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission. [31]
- June 28 - BATS Trading promoted Joe Ratterman as chief executive officer. [32]
- June 29 - The Boston Options Exchange was awarded the U.S. Options Exchange of the Year by FOW magazine. [33]
July
- July 6 - The CBOE Futures Exchange launched two new volatility index futures contracts on the CBOE Nasdaq-100 Volatility Index and the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index. [34]
- July 9 - The Chicago Mercantile Exchange acquired the Chicago Board of Trade creating the largest derivatives exchange in the world. [35]
- July 10 - BATS Trading promotes Chris Isaacson as chief operating officer. [36]
- July 11 - Volume in options on the CBOE Volatility Index VIX totaled 322,484 contracts (213,719 calls and 108,765 puts, surpassing the previous single-day volume record of 277,260 contracts set on May 16, 2007. [37]
- July 19 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit 14,000 points for the first time. [38]
- July 19 - MF Global became an initial public offering (IPO) at $30 per share. [39]
- July 24 - The CBOE announced that a seat, or membership, traded for a new all-time high of $2,650,000, surpassing the previous high of $2,600,000 which was set on July 12, 2007. [40]
- July 26 -The CBOE Futures Exchange announced that the exchange set a new single-day trading record as volume totaled 13,553 contracts traded. The new record exceeded the previous high of 12,351 contracts traded on May 10, 2007. [41]
- July 26 - The Boston Options Exchange traded over 1.2 million contracts which was the first time over one million contracts were traded at the Exchange in a daily session. [42]
August
- August 1 - The CBOE Futures Exchange set a new single-day trading record as volume totaled 27,907 contracts traded which beats out the previous all-time high of 13,553 set on July 26, 2007. Futures on the CBOE Volatility Index VIX accounted for 26,846 contracts traded, which was also a new single-day record for VIX futures. [43]
- August 6 - A CBOE seat, or membership, traded at an all-time high at the price of $2,700,000, surpassing the previous high of $2,650,000 for a CBOE seat, which was set on July 24, 2007. [44]
- August 28 - The Chicago Board Options Exchange began trading Basket Credit Event Binary Options Basket CEBOs. They launched two contracts based on the automobile and homebuilder sectors and a third on a high-yield composite basket.[45]
- August 28 - The Boston Options Exchange introduced a 'make or take' transaction fee pricing model for classes quoted in pennies. The model rewards BOX participants by compensating them for providing liquidity and will charge them when liquidity is taken. [46]
September
- September 6 - A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the Taiwan Futures Exchange.[47]
- September 27 - Chicago Board Options Exchange began trading options on the CBOE Nasdaq-100 Volatility Index and the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index.[48]
October
- October 2 - Nasdaq acquired the Boston Stock Exchange including the BSE Group holding company, the Boston Equities Exchange (BEX), the Boston Stock Exchange Clearing Corporation (BSECC) and BOX Regulation (BOXR). To trade equities and options, Nasdaq also acquired a Self Regulatory Organization (SRO) license. [49]
- October 24 - A CBOE seat, or membership, sold at an all-time high of $2,750,000, which beat out the previous record high of $270,000 set on Aug. 6, 2007.[50]
- October 31 - A Chicago Board Options Exchange seat or membership sold at an all-time high price of $2,900,000 which beat out the previous record high of $275,000 set on Oct. 24, 2007.[51]
November
- November 2 - A CBOE seat, or membership, sold at the record-breaking price of $3,000,000. This was the first time a CBOE seat sold at $3 million and surpassed the previous record price set on Oct. 31, 2007 of $2,900,000.[52]
- November 8 - The CBOE Volatility Index reported a record high 361,120 contracts which beat out the previous single-day volume record of 325,577 contracts set on July 11, 2007.[53]
- November 12 - The Chicago Board Options Exchange announced that they will publish three new benchmark indexes including the CBOE S&P 500 three-month Volatility Index, the CBOE Volatility Index Premium Strategy Index and the CBOE Capped Volatility Premium Strategy Index.[54]
- November 19 - A Chicago Board Options Exchange seat, or membership, was traded for a new all-time high of $3,050,000. The new record surpassed the previous high price of $3,000,000 for a CBOE seat, which was set on Nov. 2, 2007. [55]
- November 20 - The CBOE launched an online based, electronic trading system for trading index and equity called FLexible EXchange. [56]
December
- December 3 - The Boston Options Exchange (BOX) expanded their "make or take" model to include 25 liquid non-penny pilot names to promote tighter spreads. They also eliminated the minimum activity charge. [57]
- December 4- The Chicago Board Options Exchange announced today that the S&P 500 PutWrite Index won an award for Most Innovative Benchmark Index at the 12th Annual Super Bowl of Indexing Conference.[58]
- December 21 - The Boston Stock Exchange sold it's ownership position in the Boston Options Exchange to the Montreal Exchange for $52 million. This came after Nasdaq announced plans to purchase the Boston Stock Exchange. [59]
