In 1991, the National Futures Association (NFA) introduced an online clearinghouse of disciplinary information about futures firms and individuals. The information in the database, which at that point was available only through NFA's toll-free Information Center, was contributed by NFA, the CFTC and the exchanges.

Recognizing the need to expand the content of the database and make it more accessible, NFA in 1998 created the Background Affiliation Status Information Center, or BASIC, a browser-based system. BASIC now contains registration and disciplinary history for some 150,000 individuals and 10,000 firms. More than 600,000 BASIC searches are performed every year.

BASIC access is open to anyone and is simple to navigate. Use the following link to access the system: http://www.nfa.futures.org/basicnet/
