The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics is the principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the field of labor economics and statistics.
It's an independent national statistical agency that collects, processes, analyzes, and disseminates essential statistical data to the American public, the U.S. Congress, other Federal agencies, State and local governments, business, and labor. The BLS also serves as a statistical resource to the Department of Labor.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics is the source of the Employment Cost Index, for example. The data are seen as the most comprehensive measure of labor costs and their growth rate. As such, it signals wage inflation and is closely watched by the Federal Reserve.[1]
