Carlos Tavares [1] is the vice chairman of the Committee of European Securities Regulators. Tavares also serves as the chairman of the Comissao do Mercado de Valores Mobiliarios (CMVM), the Portuguese regulator.

Before joining the CMVM, Tavares was the head of the Bureau of European Policy Advisers to the President of the European Commission, after serving as Minister of Economy in the administration of Portuguese president José Manuel Barroso (now president of the European Commission). Previously he served in a number of governmental positions, including Member of the EEC Monetary Committee, Secretary of State for the Treasury, member of the EC Economic Policies Coordination Group and director of the Research Department of Portugal's Ministry of Finance. Tavares also held a number of positions at financial institutions and taught econometrics and macroeconomics.

Education

Tavares studied economics at Oporto University.
