Commercial banks and financial institutions differ from investment banks in earning most of their income from lending from their pool of deposits rather than by charging investment-service fees on brokerage and underwriting.[1] Most commercial-bank loans are short-term to their mostly business customers, to whom they offer additional business-based banking services.

Citigroup ranked as America's largest commercial bank in 2007 ahead of Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wachovia Corp. and Wells Fargo by Fortune magazine in their 2008 Fortune 500 lists.[2] All five rank in the top 50 of Fortune's Global 1000, well ahead of 6th-ranked commercial bank U.S.Bancorp, although only JPMorgan Chase increased its profits on commercial banking in 2007.
