Volstad was previously a hedge fund manager at Merrill Lynch.[2]

Voldstad has been in the derivatives industry since the early 1980s, when he executed his first interest-rate swap (in 1983). He was the first head of the derivatives group at J.P. Morgan in 1984 and then held several positions at Merrill Lynch, including founding Merrill Lynch Derivative Products, an entity that developed credit derivative products.

He was also part of the team that helped unwind more than $1 trillion worth of Long Term Capital Management's derivatives contracts after the fixed income hedge fund blew up in 1998.
