The surge in commodity investment and trading and the emergence of environmental-based derivatives has expanded the breadth and depth of energy futures. These fall into two broad categories: hydrocarbon-based products such as established crude oil and natural gas futures; and the fast-growing market for renewable energy products, which encompasses grain and seed-based products such as ethanol and palm oil, and emerging sectors such as weather derivatives.
