HSBC Holdings Plc is a major international banking and financial services organization. It is named after its founding member, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.[1]

With listings on the London, Hong Kong, New York, Paris and Bermuda stock exchanges, shares in HSBC Holdings plc are held by around 200,000 shareholders in some 100 countries and territories.

According to HSBC,Thomas Sutherland, a Scotsman who worked for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, realized that there was considerable demand for local banking facilities in Hong Kong and on the China coast and he helped to establish the bank which opened in Hong Kong in March 1865 and in Shanghai a month later. Soon after its formation, the bank opened agencies and branches around the world.

  • In July of 2008, HSBC was awarded "Top World Bank" by The Banker. HSBC was said to be the first non-U.S. company to lead the survey since 1999. HSBC topped the rankings by virtue of its tier-1 capital and profit before tax.[2]
  • July of 2008, HSBC Global Markets is awarded "Best Emerging Markets Bank" by Euromoney.
  • February of 2008, HSBC Global Markets is awarded "Best International Islamic Bank" by Euromoney.
