Rosenthal started his futures career in 1951 as a runner on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade, founding Rosenthal Collins in 1970. During the 1970s, Rosenthal served on the boards of both the CBOT and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He is credited with being the driving force behind the development and launch in 1975 of the GNMA futures contract, the world's first futures contract based on interest rates.

Rosenthal also was a vocal advocate for the creation of National Futures Association and served as a member of the NFA Organizing Committee. In the early 1980s, Rosenthal was elected to serve two terms as chairman of the CBOT. He also has served as chairman of the Board of Trade Clearing Corporation and director of the CME and the MidAmerica Commodity Exchange.

In 2005, Rosenthal was inducted into the FIA Futures Hall of Fame.
