A mid cap stock is one that is tied to a company with a mid-range market capitalization. Often, the gauge of a mid cap is if the company has between $1 billion to $5 billion in capitalization.

Other categories are over $5 billion in capitalization for a large cap and $250 million to $1 billion for small caps. The stock for a company with a capitalization of under $250 million is considered a micro cap stock.

Beginning in 1991, the creators of securities benchmarks introduced indexes for middle-capitalization stocks, such as the Standard & Poor's MidCap 400 Index and the Russell Midcap Index.^[1]
