Neil Barofsky
Occupation New York Assistant U.S. Attorney and TARP Special Inspector General

Neil Barofsky is the New York Assistant U.S. Attorney tapped by former President George W. Bush to be a Treasury-based "special inspector general," i.e., to oversee the government's spending of the TARP bailout money.[1]

Barofsky opened an investigation in March 2009 into whether AIG paid more government bailout money than necessary to big banks that held claims against the collapsing insurance company.[2]

Barofksy is a former lead prosecutor in the southern district's securities-fraud unit. So far, he is best known as the prosecutor who made former Refco chairman Phillip Bennett cry on the stand.[3]
