Petroleum (oil) is a liquid found in rock formations. Like other so-called fossil fuels, it generally thought to have formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants and animals. It consists of a mixture of hydrocarbons and other organic compounds.
Petroleum is the raw material for fuel oil and gasoline as well as for many other chemical products, including pharmaceuticals, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, and plastics.
