The Principles for Responsible Investment are a set of global best-practices for responsible investment. In early 2005, the United Nations Secretary-General invited a group of the world’s largest institutional investors to help develop the Principles. Representatives of 20 institutional investors from 12 countries agreed to participate in the Investor Group, which accepted ownership of the Principles, and had the freedom to develop them as they saw fit. The Principles were launched in April 2006.
The Principles complement the UN Global Compact, which asks companies to embed in their strategies and operations a set of universal principles in the areas of human rights, labor standards, the environment and anti-corruption. The Principles are also a natural extension of the work of the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative, which has helped sensitize capital markets to the importance of environmental and social issues.[1]
