R.J. O’Brien and Associates, LLC. (RJO) is the oldest independent futures commission merchants (FCM) in the United States and considered one of the last "boutique firms" in the industry.

Founded in 1914, RJO is a founding member of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and a full clearing member of: the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT); New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX); Intercontinental Exchange (ICE); NYSE LIFFE and CBOE Futures Exchange (CFE).

RJO services a global network of more than 300 introducing brokers, along with some of the world’s largest financial, industrial and agricultural institutions. The firm says it provides clearing services for more than 80,000 client accounts.[1]

History

R.J. O’Brien & Associates is owned by the O'Brien family, although its ownership stake has varied over the company's history. As of 2011, the firm reported client assets of about $2 billion and a revenue base of about $300 million annually, with a net capital base of about $100 million.[2]

In December of 2010, R.J. O'Brien & Associates was back in the hands of its founding family members after the two private equity firms opted to sell back the control acquired in 2007.[3]

The firm had sold a majority stake to investment firms Spectrum Equity Investors and Technology Crossover Ventures in 2007 for an undisclosed sum.[4] The O’Brien family retained a minority ownership in the company.[5]
