Richard Schaeffer [1] is chairman of NYMEX Holdings, Inc., and of the New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc. Schaeffer also serves as the chairman of the Board of the NYMEX Charitable Foundation and was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Norweigan financial derivatives exchange IMAREX ASA [2].
Schaeffer is currently serving as chief executive officer of the Green Exchange, an exchange for trading carbon-emission credits, until the board of directors appoints a full-time chief executive.[3]
Schaeffer is a board member of the Commodity Floor Brokers & Traders Association.[4]

Schaeffer has been a NYMEX member and seat-owner since 1981. He has been a member of NYMEX's board of directors since March 1990. Schaeffer served as treasurer of the Exchange from 1993 to 2004 and vice chairman from 2004 to 2006, and has been an Executive Committee member since 1992.
Previously, Schaeffer was an executive director of Global Energy Futures for ABN Amro, Inc., and a conferring member on behalf of the company and its predecessor, Chicago Corp., since 1987 on all of the New York futures exchanges.
Politically in 2007, Schaeffer donated to Moran for Congress, John McCain 2008 Inc., Chris Dodd for President Inc, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Rudy Giuliani Presidential Committee Inc.[5]
In April 2007, Schaeffer was honored by the We are Family Foundation.[6] He joined the board of governors of the We are Family Foundation in May of 2007.[7]
Education
Schaeffer is a 1974 graduate of the University of Maryland, majoring in accounting. In December 2006, he delivered the commencement keynote address at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland.[8]
