A shareholder is an investor of any size who buys company stocks, either directly or indirectly, and holds them as a longer-term investment.

Shareholders have traditionally been synonymous with larger investment institutions like public pension funds but with the expansion of online trading and and the rise of mutual funds and ETFs, 50% of U.S. households are now considered shareholders.[1] These include workers contributing to 401(k) plans and IRAs as well as those investing on their own account.
