Luthringshausen began his career in the securities and futures industry in 1963 with two regional firms in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1970, he joined the Chicago Board of Trade to assume an active role in the development of the Chicago Board Options Exchange.

In April 1973, when trading was launched at the CBOE, Luthringshausen was appointed executive vice president and secretary of the Chicago Board Options Exchange Clearing Corporation (CBOECC) and six months later was appointed president and CEO. In January of 1975, the CBOECC became OCC with the approval of the Securities and Exchange Commission. OCC currently performs the issuance, clearance, guarantee and settlement functions for all U.S. securities options exchanges and other entities.

Education

Luthringshausen is a graduate of Loyola University of Chicago where he earned a BS in accounting. In 1979, he completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
