Bolsa y Mercados Españoles
|Bolsa y Mercados Españoles|
Bolsa y Mercados Españoles (BME) is the operator of all the Spanish stock markets and financial systems. It controls almost all the cash equities trading, clearing and settlements business in Spain, Europe’s sixth-biggest market by volume.
BME comprises more than 20 subsidiaries. Some of the most well-known are Bolsa de Madrid, Bolsa de Barcelona, Bolsa de Bilbao, Bolsa de Valencia, AIAF Mercado de Renta Fija, MEFF, IBERCLEAR, MAB, Visual Trader BME Consulting, BME Innova, BME Market Data and Infobolsa.
BME has been a listed company since 14 July 2006 and an IBEX 35 constituent since July 2007.
BME has had a near-monopoly over trading in Spain. However, in February 2010, Spain’s stock market regulator, the CNMV, announced the beginning of a public consultation period on changes that will ultimately break that near-monopoly. The proposed reforms are aimed at making the post-trading system, run by the BME’s Iberclear, more compatible with “accepted European practices and standards in this activity”.
