Balasubramaniam Venkataramani is the managing director and chief operating officer of the India International Exchange (INX), which officially opened for trading on January 17, 2017. A wholly owned subsidiary of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the exchange offers a wide range of global benchmark products across all major asset classes, including equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, and currency and interest rate derivatives.[1] [2]

The exchange is located at the International Financial Service Centre (IFSC) Gujarat International Finance Tech (GIFT) City, Gujarat, a so-called special economic zone which provides various tax benefits to participants. It aims to compete with other offshore banking hubs such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai.[3] [4][5]

BSE’s managing director and chief executive officer Ashish Chauhan is chairman of the INX board, which also includes former Reserve Bank of India deputy governor Anand Sinha, and economist Ajit Ranade.

Balasubramaniam Venkataramani also serves as the chief business officer of Bombay Stock Exchange Limited, responsible for the markets business encompassing Equities, Equity Derivatives, Debt, Interest Rate Futures, Currency Derivatives, Mutual Fund Distribution platform. In the Currency Derivatives, he has been instrumental in making the BSE reach a market share of over 45 % in a short period of time.


Before becoming managing director and chief operating officer of the INX, V. Balasubramaniam served as the head of business operations at BSE and served as its head of special initiatives. He has been shareholder director of central depository services India Limited since August 26, 2015 and served as its shareholder director from May 28, 2012 till March 05, 2015. He was also in-charge of all the new initiatives planned by BSE including the setting up of Commodities Market and International exchanges in GIFT City.

He was part of the core-team involved in setting up of the National Stock Exchange in 1993 and was involved in the roll out of the capital markets segment, creation of National Securities Clearing Corporation Limited, the Nifty-50 index in 1995, setting up NCFM the first certification program in stock markets and the equity derivatives segment among others.

He serves or has served in numerous boards, including the Central Depository Services of India Ltd, BSE Institute Limited, ASIA INDEX PVT LTD a joint venture between BSE and S&P Dow Jones Index, BFSI Sector Skill Council, BSE Investments, Bank of India Shareholding Ltd, Calcutta Stock Exchange etc. He currently serves as the Board Member of the Futures Industry Association – Asia and is the Co-Chair of the Capital Markets Working Group of FICCI.

He is also a board member of Future Industry Association (Asia) and co-chairman of the capital working group of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Before joining BSE, he was employed with Reliance Industries and is also the co-founder of Marketplace Technologies.

From October 2007 - September 2009 he was CEO of Basis Point, and from September 2009 - November 2010 he was chief operating officer at the United Stock Exchange of India.


Bala Venkataramani holds a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce and a Master's in Commerce from the University of Bombay.
