Chopper Trading is a mid-sized proprietary trading firm with offices in Chicago, New York, London, San Francisco and Washington D.C. [1]

The company is a member of the Principal Traders Group, an advisory group formed by the Futures Industry Association (FIA) to represent principal traders (i.e. independent proprietary trading firms that trade only on their own accounts).[2]

In January 2015, rival proprietary trading firm DRW Trading Group agreed to buy the assets of Chopper for an undisclosed sum, and merge the two firms.[3]


Chopper is a technology-based proprietary trading firm and was founded in 2002 by Raj Fernando.[4] It is headquartered in the Chicago Board of Trade Building in downtown Chicago and has other offices in New York, London, San Francisco and Washington D.C.[5]

Chopper claims to have very low employee turnover. They offer employees many perks, including shuffleboard, pool, Ping-Pong or videogames in the Chicago offices' 3,000-square-foot game and exercise room.[6] In 2012, Chopper was named by the Chicago Tribune as one of the top workplaces.[7]

In April 2014, Jump was one of six high speed trading firms subpoenaed by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman regarding their trading strategies, as well as the special arrangements they may have with exchanges and dark pools.[8]

At the time of its acquisition, Chopper had a presence on all major U.S. exchanges member of the including CME, CBOT, and NYSE, plus many major international exchanges including LSE and ICE.[9]
