Global Digital Assets Exchange (GDAX), is the spot cryptocurrency exchange owned by Coinbase aimed at professional traders.[1]

The exchange uses a maker-taker fee model, real-time order books, charting tools, trade history, and a simple order process. It can operate in nearly every state in the U.S. and is available in 32 countries. In June 2016, GDAX reached 4 million users.[2]

History

The exchange, originally called the Coinbase Exchange, was rebranded as GDAX in May 2016, offering trading on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies such as ethereum to professional traders. Coinbase was then designated as a place for retail customers to buy, sell and store digital currencies.[3][4]

The exchange extended its distribution channels in 2018 with several key equity and derivatives trading software providers. In January of 2018, GDAX partnered with Trading Technologies to offer spot cryptocurrencies on TT’s platform, marking the first such independent software vendor to do so. That connection went live in March 2018.

TradeStation, an online broker-dealer and futures commission merchant, began offering realtime GDAX cryptocurrency prices in March 2018, with trade execution services expected to follow.[5][6]

Products and Services

GDAX charges liquidity providers 0 percent on all market orders and a tiered fee structure for liquidity takers between 0.1 percent and 0.3 percent, starting in April 2018.[7]

GDAX holds its digital assets in fully-insured online storage and customer funds are FDIC insured, which means each customer is entitled to up to $250,000 in remuneration in the event of a loss.[8][9][10]
