The IMC Group is a global financial organization, made up of IMC Financial Markets and IMC Asset Management, located in Amsterdam, New York, Chicago, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Zug. It is among the few firms with rights to call itself a designated market maker at the NYSE.[1]

Its core business unit, IMC Financial Markets, is one of the world’s most active proprietary trading firms and a key market maker in various products listed on more than 100 markets around the world. [2] They are a proponent of "properly regulated and centrally cleared" markets.

Its other business unit, IMC Asset Management, is an alternative investment manager focused on structured products for institutional investors.[3]

History

IMC, a privately-held company, was founded in Amsterdam in 1989 by two market makers working on the open outcry floor of Europe’s first options exchange. It is active as a proprietary trading firm in over 100 exchanges, platforms and pools of liquidity across the world.

IMC Chicago LLC was established in 2000 and is now IMC’s largest office outside Amsterdam.[4] IMC Chicago finalized a takeover of Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s NYSE business unit, allowing it to manage buying and selling of dozens of stocks. IMC is now the designated market maker for about 640 NYSE-listed securities from almost 500 issuers, including some top names such as International Business Machines Corp., Verizon Communications Inc., Bank of America and Visa Inc.[5] [6]
