The Illinois Council on Economic Education (ICEE) is a partnership of government, industry and educational interests affiliated with the National Council on Economic Education, that provides teaching materials on economics and markets to Illinois students through the EconomicsAmerica Program. It is located at the University of Northern Illinois in DeKalb.

Brief history

The ICEE was established in 1951 with the aim of assuring that all Illinois students leave school with a solid understanding of the economic system they will live in as employees, consumers, investors and voters.[1] It is led by a Governing Board and Board of Trustees drawn from a broad spectrum of private and public interests and forms part of the Division of University Outreach at Northern Illinois University.

ICEE is the oldest of the state councils affiliated with the National Council on Economic Education, which this year changed its name to the Council for Economic Education (CEE).[2] The CEE has developed a comprehensive school program of cross-curriculum teaching materials and aims to expand both its national and global reach.

Key people

President and Executive Director Joanne R. Dempsey has over 30 years of experience in economic education leadership after beginning her career as Assistant Director of the Center for Economic Education at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, IL in 1977.[3] Later she won first the Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education (1992) and after joining ICEE in 1995 won the NAEE Bessie Moore Service Award in 2000. Dempsey is also President of the National Association of Economic Educators.

The ICEE's annual American Dream Dinner Event is the council's primary source of on-going fundraising and will be held this year on April 9, 2009 at the Art Insititue of Chicago.[4]
