Jan-Michiel Hessels is a director at the Intercontinental Exchange Inc. He served as chairman of the board of NYSE Euronext after the merger of Euronext and NYSE Group in 2007. Before that, he was chairman of the supervisory board of Euronext N.V. and of the Amsterdam Exchange since its creation in 1997 until 2000.[1]

Background

Hessels has pursued a varied career in finance, basic industries and retailing, and prior to the formation of Euronext, he was CEO of Vendex KBB, the Netherlands-based retailer, from 1990 to 2000. He was a member of the supervisory board of Amsterdam Exchanges from its creation in 1997 and served on the supervisory boards of a number of Dutch companies: Vopak, the logistics group (1999-2005); retailer Laurus (1998-2004); and Schiphol Group, the airport operator (1993-2006), as well as Barnes and Noble.com Inc (1999-2003)[2].

He started his career at SG Warburg & Co in London, moving to the Overseas Development Bank in Geneva and then McKinsey & Co in New York and Amsterdam before becoming corporate treasurer at Akzo, the Dutch chemicals group now known as Akzo Nobel. He was appointed head of Akzo's operations in Brazil and Argentina in 1977 before becoming executive vice-president of Akzona, a US chemicals group acquired by Akzo, in 1982. He became CEO of Deli Universal, a Dutch building materials group in 1985, before joining Vendex in 1990[3].

Affiliations

Hessels currently is a member of the supervisory boards of Euronext Amsterdam, Philips Electronics, Heineken and Fortis, the Belgo-Dutch bancassurer. In addition, he serves on the international advisory boards of the Blackstone Group and SC Johnson.

Education

He studied at the Universities of Leiden (1966, Master of Law), London School of Economics (Labor Economics) and The Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania (1969, Masters Degree in Finance and Business Administration).
