The CME Group has an active if somewhat convoluted history of acquiring and hosting precious metals futures and options contracts.

The metals complex that trades currently at CME Group previously was owned by the Commodity Exchange Inc., known as the COMEX. COMEX was purchased in 1994 by the New York Mercantile Exchange, where it continued to operate as the COMEX Division of New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc.

On Aug. 18, 2008, CME Group said its acquisition of NYMEX Holdings Inc. was approved by NYMEX members, after a tumultuous seven-month campaign.[1].

Prior, the CME Group had another precious metals complex, which it had acquired when it purchased the Chicago Board of Trade.

Due to anti-trust concerns, CME Group sold the CBOT legacy precious metals contracts to NYSE Liffe US in March 2008. [2]
