Preferred stock is typically a higher ranking stock than common stock. There are four different types of preferred stock: cumulative preferred, non-cumulative, participating, and convertible.

Preferred stocks, also called preferred shares, generally have a dividend that must be paid out before dividends to common stockholders. The shares usually do not have voting rights. They have characteristics of both debt (fixed dividends) and equity (potential appreciation).
