Early in his career, Carmichael worked with Tullett & Tokyo in London as an analyst within their futures operation. Carmichael later joined a proprietary trading group formed by some colleagues from Tulletts. This was subsequently acquired by the Austrian bank, Creditanstalt, which became Bank Austria Creditanstalt.
Carmichael played a major part in setting up the European bank's alternative investment management subsidiary. Appointed managing director, he worked to structure funds, conduct due diligence and monitoring, and make direct investments to CTAs (commodity trading advisors) and hedge funds across the globe.
Later, joining technology company Fujitsu as a client director in the financial services division gave him the opportunity to take a look at new technologies and what was driving the investment banks.
Carmichael went to business school in Aberdeen, Scotland.
