A scale order is an instruction for a trade to be executed in multiple pieces, at specified prices, rather than as one block order. Scale orders are used in an electronic trading environment to mask the true size of a large order. Brokers have developed algorithmic tools such as Interactive Brokers' ScaleTrade to ensure that larger sized orders "are not subject to increasingly deteriorating prices." [1]
