Waqas Samad is the CEO of FTSE Russell and group director of the information services division at London Stock Exchange Group. He was named to those roles in May 2019. He replaced Mark Makepeace at FTSE Russell. Samad reports to David Schwimmer, the CEO of LSEG.
He is also chairman of the Index Industry Association.
Samad had been the CEO of benchmarks at FTSE Russell since 2016. He joined LSEG in 2016 in that role, where he was responsible for leading FTSE Russell's global growth into indexes across all asset classes.
Samad has spent almost 25 years in the financial services industry. As CEO of Benchmarks at FTSE Russell, he led the firm’s expansion in fixed income through the acquisition of the Citi Fixed Income Indexes and The Yield Book businesses. He was also responsible for the FTSE Canada business in North America.
Before joining LSEG and FTSE Russell in July of 2016, he was CEO of Barclays Risk Analytics & Index Solutions from 2007 – Jan 2016.
He spent three years as head of index research Europe/Asia for Deutsche Bank and five years at Credit Suisse in a variety of quant and technology roles.
Samad holds a Bachelors’ degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Imperial College and has completed the Investment Management Programme at London Business School.
