Amaranth Advisors was a hedge fund that imploded in 2007 after its biggest trader, Brian Hunter, made highly leveraged bets on natural gas that eventually ended up losing about $4.6 billion for the company. Amaranth's trading losses were among the biggest since 1998, when Long-Term Capital Management lost $4 billion investing in government bonds. [1]

Amaranth was founded by Nicholas Maounis and based in Greenwich, Connecticut.
