Planning to become a futures exchange, Bitnomial first applied to the CFTC in September 2016. The company raised $7.5 million in equity funding in December 2018. Investors included Jump Capital, Coinbase Ventures, Digital Currency Group, RRE Ventures, and ValueStream Ventures.
Upon designation by the CFTC, Bitnomial said that it would list deliverable futures contracts on both one full and one-tenth bitcoins. It also said it would offer options on the one-bitcoin futures. In a statement congratulating the exchange, Minneapolis Grain Exchange, Inc., which operates a futures exchange as well as a derivatives clearing organization, said that it would clear Bitnomial futures contracts.
