Bitnomial was approved by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as a futures exchange, or designated contract market, on April 17, 2020.[1]

Overview

Planning to become a futures exchange, Bitnomial first applied to the CFTC in September 2016. The company raised $7.5 million in equity funding in December 2018.[2] Investors included Jump Capital, Coinbase Ventures, Digital Currency Group, RRE Ventures, and ValueStream Ventures.[3]

Upon designation by the CFTC, Bitnomial said that it would list deliverable futures contracts on both one full and one-tenth bitcoins. It also said it would offer options on the one-bitcoin futures. In a statement congratulating the exchange, Minneapolis Grain Exchange, Inc., which operates a futures exchange as well as a derivatives clearing organization, said that it would clear Bitnomial futures contracts.[4]
