Occupation founder
Employer Man Group plc

James Man (1755 - 1823) founded Man Group plc.

Background

Man was born in Whitechapel, Middlesex. He was apprenticed as a cooper (barrel-maker) to William Humphrey and in 1783 set up his own business as a sugar cooper and broker. The cooper side of the business soon disappeared and the company became solely a broker. In 1784, he landed a contract with the Admiralty to supply rum for the Royal Navy which lasted almost 200 years. He and Humphrey became partners again in 1787. Humphrey retired in 1795; James's sons Edward and James soon joined the firm and became partners. The older James retired in 1819. The brokerage became Man Group plc.
