On March 20, 2020, CME Group announced it had auctioned off Ronin Capital's portfolios after Ronin became an apparent victim of the market turmoil in which U.S. stocks plunged more than 30% from their peak because of the novel coronavirus. Ronin was a direct clearing firm for CME. CME said the firm was unable to meet its capital requirements going forward.[2] Ronin did not handle customer business, CME said, so no clients incurred losses as a result of the liquidation.[3]

History

Ronin is owned by John Stafford III and his father, John Stafford Jr. It was a proprietary trading firm that traded only for its owners and not for clients.[4]
