Alex Gerko is a Russian-born, London-based quantitative trader, philanthropist and the founder of XTX Markets, an electronic market-making and liquidity provider in the global financial industry. He is widely recognized for his contributions to the field of quantitative trading and his pioneering efforts in developing advanced trading algorithms and technology.[1][2]

His firm handles almost $300 billion in daily volume trading equities, commodities, currency and fixed income, which has made him a billionaire and in 2023 the U.K.'s biggest taxpayer.[3]

Background[edit]

Gerko grew up in a modest neighborhood in Moscow, attending an ordinary school in the city's suburbs. His exceptional mathematical talent emerged early and he participated in city-wide competitions by the age of 12. He aspired to win a Fields Medal, akin to a Nobel Prize in mathematics.

In 2006, Gerko relocated to London, acquiring British citizenship ten years later. He renounced his Russian citizenship in 2022 and was outspoken in his criticism of Russia's Ukraine invasion.[4]

Gerko established XTX Markets eight years ago. He holds a majority stake in the business, amassing an estimated fortune of $6.4 billion, as reported by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.[5] Gerko initially traded equities at Deutsche Bank before transitioning to foreign exchange. Following his tenure at Deutsche Bank, he joined the hedge fund GSA Capital in 2009, subsequently launching XTX.[6]

Over the past seven years, XTX has donated over £100 million to various charitable causes, including £10 million to the NHS during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. Gerko and XTX also contributed at least £20 million to aid Ukraine since the commencement of the invasion. More recently, they provided £1.6 million in funding to the United Nations Refugee Agency to assist Armenia in accommodating the influx of refugees from the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.[7]

Education[edit]

Gerko received a doctorate from Moscow State University and later studied at the New Economic School.[8]
