Alexander Potemkin is senior vice-president for Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange (MICEX). Before taking his current position, Potemkin served as president of MICEX from April of 2003 until September of 2008. He also held the position of chairman of the MICEX Exchange Council from 1993 to 1999.
From 1982 to 1991 Potemkin worked at Vnesheconombank and Gosbank, first as head of the department for currency auctions of Vnesheconombank, and later as the director of the currency exchange of Gosbank (which later became MICEX).
Potemkin took an active part in the formation of the currency market in Russia; from December of 1991 until November of 1998, he worked for the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. From 1996 until 1998 he held the position of deputy chairman for the Bank of Russia, and was a member on the board of directors for the bank.
From 1999 until 2000 he also worked as an advisor to the board of directors of Vnesheconombank.
Since 2000 he has been first deputy chairman of the board of MFK Bank. After the consolidation of the business of ROSBANK and MFK Bank in July 2002, Potemkin was appointed as deputy chairman of the board of directors for ROSBANK.
Potemkin graduated from Moscow State University, the Faculty of Economics.
