Bridgewater Associates is an American investment management firm founded by Ray Dalio in 1975. It is one of the world's largest hedge funds, managing approximately $150 billion in global investments for institutional clients such as pension funds, endowments, foundations, foreign governments, and central banks.[1]

History[edit]

Bridgewater Associates was founded by Ray Dalio in 1975 from his two-bedroom apartment in New York City.[2] Initially, the firm focused on providing institutional clients with advisory services, particularly in currencies and interest rates.[3]

In 1981, the company moved its headquarters from New York City to Westport, Connecticut[4]. The firm's big break came when McDonald's signed on as a client, leading to rapid growth and the acquisition of larger clients, including pension funds for the World Bank and Eastman Kodak.

Bridgewater Associates launched its flagship fund, Pure Alpha, in 1991. The fund was designed to generate returns above market averages by employing a blend of macroeconomic insights, quantitative analysis, and risk management strategies.[5]

In 1996, the firm introduced the All Weather fund, pioneering the risk parity approach to portfolio management. This strategy aims to balance risk among various non-correlated assets through active management.

By 2005, Bridgewater Associates had become the world's largest hedge fund. From 1991 to 2005, it lost money in only three calendar years, and never more than 4%.

Products and Services[edit]

Bridgewater Associates offers three main hedge funds to its clients:

  • Pure Alpha: Launched in 1991, this fund is described as a "diversified alpha source" that invests across various asset classes.
  • All Weather: Introduced in 1996, this fund pioneered the risk parity approach to portfolio management.
  • Pure Alpha Major Markets: A variation of the Pure Alpha strategy.

The firm also publishes a white paper called "Daily Observations," which is read by investors worldwide on a subscription basis.

Bridgewater's investment philosophy is based on several strategies, including Pure Alpha, Pure Alpha Major Markets, All Weather, and Optimal Portfolio. These strategies aim to generate the highest return-to-risk ratio possible through active management, trading a highly diversified set of liquid global markets, and taking advantage of spreading risk across many diversifying trading strategies.
