Colm Furlong is an Irish financial technology executive who serves as senior vice president and global head of business development at Trading Technologies, having previously held senior product strategy and commercial management positions across global financial software firms including OSL, ION Markets, Fidessa, and SunGard.[1]

Background[edit]

GNI and MF Global[edit]

Colm Furlong began his financial technology career in London, where he managed technology teams at brokerage firms GNI and MF Global. During his tenure at these firms, Furlong focused on developing early software systems for the electronic trading of contracts for difference (CFDs). CFDs represented a growing segment of over-the-counter derivatives that permitted institutional investors to gain leveraged price exposure to equities and market indexes without taking physical delivery of underlying assets. Furlong directed software architecture and trade routing development, establishing technical infrastructure capable of real-time market data dissemination and automated execution as market trading shifted from open-outcry trading floors to electronic workstations.[2]

The structural transition from manual pit execution to screen-based trading required brokerages to build scalable direct market access architectures capable of supporting rising message traffic while maintaining system latency controls. Furlong's work at GNI and MF Global centered on client execution software, order processing workflows, and automated middle-office connectivity designed to improve operational efficiency and provide institutional liquidity. These software engineering initiatives contributed to the standardization of CFD execution platforms across European sell-side brokerages.[3]

SunGard[edit]

Following his work in brokerage technology, Furlong joined financial software vendor SunGard as head of equities business solutions. In this role, he managed global product initiatives for Front Arena, SunGard's capital markets enterprise trading and risk management platform. His responsibilities encompassed commercial product planning, execution workflow design, and multi-asset routing solutions deployed across institutional banks, broker-dealers, and buy-side asset managers.[4]

During his time at SunGard, European capital markets experienced structural changes stemming from the implementation of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID I). The regulatory framework eliminated exchange concentration rules, causing equity order flow to fragment across traditional primary exchanges and emerging multilateral trading facilities. To support market participant compliance, Furlong led SunGard software initiatives focused on smart order routing, trade execution reporting, and automated settlement workflows. SunGard was subsequently acquired by Fidelity Information Services (FIS) in 2015. During his tenure at SunGard, Furlong worked alongside capital markets executives including Alun Green, who later joined Trading Technologies as executive vice president and managing director of futures and options.[5]

Fidessa and ION Markets[edit]

Furlong spent 13 years at trading systems provider Fidessa, holding several global product management and strategy titles. His roles included head of global program trading strategy and, following a relocation to Hong Kong, Asia head of product marketing and strategy. In these capacities, Furlong directed product development, commercial positioning, and enterprise client deployments for Fidessa's sell-side order management systems, execution management software, and program trading solutions across Asia-Pacific markets.

As proprietary trading firms and institutional investment managers expanded their use of algorithmic order execution, sell-side firms required trading technology capable of supporting high-volume VWAP strategies, basket trading, and real-time market data links. Furlong oversaw platform integrations across regional market centers, including Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX), and managed commercial partnerships with interface visualization providers such as ChartIQ to embed charting functionality into sell-side workstations. After ION Group completed its acquisition of Fidessa, Furlong served as regional head of product marketing for ION Markets in Asia, overseeing platform strategy as financial institutions migrated toward software-as-a-service operational models. During his career at Fidessa and ION, Furlong worked with technology executive Justin Llewellyn-Jones, who held senior roles at Fidessa and ION prior to becoming chief executive officer of Trading Technologies, as well as capital markets technical consultant James Hardcastle.[6]

OSL[edit]

In June 2021, Furlong was appointed managing director and head of SaaS at OSL, an institutional digital asset platform operated by BC Technology Group (later renamed OSL Group). Operating from Hong Kong, Furlong was responsible for commercializing OSL's institutional software platform, enabling global financial institutions, private wealth managers, and professional investors to deploy white-label cryptocurrencies platforms, execution services, and insured asset custody infrastructure.[7]

Furlong's tenure at OSL coincided with the formalization of virtual asset regulatory frameworks in Asia-Pacific, including licensing requirements administered by Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission. Working within this regulated framework, Furlong expanded OSL's SaaS business line to support institutional bitcoin trading, security token distribution, and fund servicing partnerships. He worked alongside OSL executives including chief executive officer Wayne Trench, director of business development Joe Zhou, and head of UK exchange operations Arion Ho. Furlong also engaged in industry discussions regarding market structure convergence alongside fintech advisor Steve Grob. Under Furlong's business unit direction, OSL SaaS received the 2022 WealthBriefingAsia Investment Platform Award.[8]

Trading Technologies[edit]

Furlong serves as senior vice president and global head of business development at Trading Technologies. In this role, he oversees the company's global commercial development, exchange relationship strategy, and cross-asset growth initiatives. Trading Technologies provides multi-asset execution software, market connectivity, and risk management tools across listed derivatives markets, including futures and options, as well as fixed income, foreign exchange, and digital asset venues.[9]

Furlong's responsibilities center on broadening institutional platform distribution as buy-side firms and sell-side swap dealers consolidate execution technology onto unified SaaS environments. In response to structural shifts across multi-asset trading desks—such as the growth of electronic cash bond markets, central clearing for interest rate swaps, and international market connectivity across derivatives venues such as CME Group (CME)—Furlong works with Trading Technologies executive committee leadership. This management team includes chief executive officer Justin Llewellyn-Jones, chief strategy officer Nick Garrow, and chief revenue officer Josh Monroe.[10]

Education[edit]

Colm Furlong graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Pure Economics from University College Dublin.[11]
