In its May 2019 request for public comment titled Issues, Risks and Regulatory Considerations Relating to Crypto-Asset Trading Platforms, the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) christened a new term, crypto-asset trading platforms (CTPs). CTPs are often referred to as cryptocurrency exchanges, although use of the term "exchange" might imply formal recognition under regulation that in 2019 generally did not exist.[1] In addition, most CTPs that custody customers' crypto-assets conduct business as dealers, being the actual counterparty to customer transactions.

Cryptocurrencies are types of crypto-assets.
