The Digital Dollar Project is a non-profit organization focused on exploring and promoting research into a United States Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), also known as a "digital dollar." The project aims to encourage public discussion on the potential advantages and challenges of a U.S. CBDC, bringing together private sector thought leaders and proposing possible models to support the public sector.[1]

History[edit]

The Digital Dollar Project was created in 2020 as a partnership between Accenture and the Digital Dollar Foundation. It was established to advance the exploration of a U.S. CBDC in response to the growing global interest in digital currencies and the development of CBDCs by other nations, particularly China[2].

In May 2021, the Digital Dollar Project announced the launch of at least five pilot programs over the next 12 months. These pilots were designed to explore, analyze, and identify technical and functional requirements for a U.S. CBDC, as well as assess benefits and outstanding challenges[3].

Products and Services[edit]

The Digital Dollar Project does not produce a digital currency itself but rather focuses on research, exploration, and public discussion. Its main activities include:

  1. Pilot Programs: Conducting experimental pilots to test various aspects of a potential U.S. CBDC[4].
  2. Research and White Papers: Developing frameworks and proposing core elements for a potential digital dollar[5].
  3. Public Discussion: Organizing forums, stakeholder meetings, and roundtable discussions to foster dialogue on the topic of a U.S. CBDC[6].
  4. Global Convenings: Hosting international conferences to facilitate strategic conversations on the evolving digital infrastructure landscape[7].
