Background Chicago Mercantile Exchange Carter spent roughly 25 years as an independent trader and market maker on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, primarily in interest rate, agricultural and equity index futures. As a floor trader he traded on his own account in a pit-based environment that pre‑dated the dominance of electronic trading, using spread trading and other relative‑value strategies at a time when open outcry still played a central role in liquidity provision and price discovery in U.S. futures markets. Move to Nevada and political activity Carter relocated from Illinois to Nevada in the early 2020s after retiring from active trading and later described himself as a “retired businessman” entering public life. In January 2026, he announced his candidacy for Nevada state treasurer as a Republican, stating that his campaign would focus on reducing waste, fraud and abuse in state finances and applying experience from trading and investing to the stewardship of public funds. His run for treasurer has drawn attention within Nevada politics, including coverage of a contested Republican primary and endorsements from conservative groups and local activists who cite his background in markets and business.
