Occupation Sixth President of NYSE (1831-1834)

John Ward was the sixth president of the New York Stock & Exchange Board, which in 1863 shortened its name to the New York Stock Exchange. Ward succeeded Russell H. Nevins as president.[1][2]

Background[edit]

The exchange, which had been created in 1792 with the signing of the Buttonwood Agreement, was formally organized with a constitution drafted in 1817.

Ward was known as "Honest John Ward." His sister, Julia Ward Howe, was the author of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic."[3][4]
