Joseph K. Brenner is the chief counsel of the Division of Enforcement of the Securities and Exchange Commission. He was named to the position on November 10, 2010. In that role he will oversee the process of providing legal and policy advice on potential enforcement actions before they are recommended to the commission for approval.[1][2][3]

Background[edit]

Brenner joined the SEC from the law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, where he was been a partner since 1990.[4] At WilmerHale, Brenner last served as the firm's vice chair of the securities department and as a member of the securities litigation and enforcement practice group.[5]

Prior to joining WilmerHale, Brenner was a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Education[edit]

Brenner received his JD cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center and his undergraduate degree from Cornell University.
