Holding a long position is the state of actually owning a security, contract, or commodity. It is the opposite of being short.

In futures, one would theoretically "own" the contract, but in reality because futures are unlike securities in terms of having an equity stake, it would be more appropriate to consider long to mean the buying of the contract to be held until some future date.
