Mary Ann Burns is a craft beer executive, public relations professional and retired derivatives industry executive.

She retired in July of 2016 as executive vice president & chief operating officer of the Futures Industry Association. At the time of her retirement, she was profiled by John Lothian News in a story titled "Mary Ann Burns: A Thirst for the Futures Industry and a Crafty Career."[1]

She currently is chief operating officer at Old Ox Brewery, the craft brewery owned by her family.[2]

In 2017, Burns was named to the FIA Futures Hall of Fame.[3]

Background[edit]

Burns began her career in the futures industry as a research assistant, eventually becoming a marketing associate with futures broker Heinold Commodities After serving for several years, she left the firm to start her own company, Burns & Company. Her clients included futures firms, but also some outside the industry. She had the MidAmerica Commodity Exchange, Saul Stone, Anspacher, and Wills Jenkins as clients at Burns & Co.[4]

Her relationship with the FIA began in 1985, when her firm was hired to be the program coordinator for the first Futures and Options Expo in Chicago. Over the next thirty years, Burns continued to coordinate FIA events, and took on additional responsibilities as editor of the association's member magazine, head of operations and executive chair of FIA Technology Services.[5]

In January 2016, she also became executive chair of the FIA Tech board of directors.[6]

She also served as publisher of MarketVoice (formerly Futures Industry), the FIA's bimonthly industry magazine. She previously served as the magazine's editor-in-chief.

Education[edit]

In 1972, Burns earned a B.A. Journalism from Purdue University and in 2008 she earned an M.A. in Professional Writing and Editing from George Mason University.
