Maurice Farhart was an exchange official and former trader who was a longtime executive with the Australian Stock Exchange. He passed away in May of 2024.[1][2]

Background[edit]

After graduating from university with a finance degree, Farhart joined a small Australian bank, Commercial Bank and Company of Sydney, which was later swallowed by the National Australia Bank, one of the big four banks in Australia.

Farhart joined the Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE) in 1999 as their treasurer following his several years in the banking industry. Over the years at SFE and then ASX after the two exchanges merged in 2006, he moved into a business development role, initially focusing on new products and customer management. He then left the exchange and traded his own account for three years before returning to ASX to lead the International Business Development team.[3]

Farhart traded with Rex Trading Pty Ltd in Sydney, Australia as a proprietary trader for two years, primarily trading in Australian and US futures contracts.

Before joining ASX the first time in 1999, Farhart was with HSBC as its deputy treasurer in Sydney. He had a 12 year career with HSBC as a fixed income trader and then as head of rates trading and sales, then deputy treasurer.
