Clearing firms are independent intermediaries that specialize in clearing trades through a clearing house. They are generally members of stock or futures exchanges, which allows them access to place trades, as well as settle and deliver them.

In securities, clearing firms manage the back-office details of securities transactions between broker-dealers.

In futures, clearing firms are members of specific exchange and handle clearing of trades for exchange members, other clearing firms, non-clearing futures commission merchants.
