McGonigle, formerly Murphy & McGonigle, is a law firm with offices in New York, NY, Washington D.C. and Richmond, Virginia.[1] The firm renamed itself McGonigle, P.C. in January 2022.[2]

Background[edit]

Murphy & McGonigle was founded in 2010. In 2012, the firm was selected by U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers as a National Tier 1 Law Firm. They have been similarly honored every year since, making them the youngest firm in the category of Securities Regulation, Securities Litigation, and Corporate Law to be honored in such a way; the next-youngest firm is older by 36 years.[3]

Overview[edit]

McGonigle participates in industry fintech working groups, such as the Hyperledger Project, an international open source collaborative effort created to advance blockchain technologies. [4][5] It was the first law firm to partner with the Hyperledger Project, in November 2016.[6] [7]

The firm operates a website called "Blockchain Law Center," which is dedicated exclusively to the legal and regulatory developments in blockchain technology. The site was launched in March 2018.[8]

In summer 2019, Murphy and McGonigle launched Blockchain Litigation Database (BLD), which provides a searchable database focused on blockchain-related litigation. The earliest case in the database is the money-laundering case filed against the "bitcoin maven, Theresa Tetley. The BLD also includes the New York case against Bitfinex. BLD data include total cases, annual trends, whether a case is criminal or civil, whether the case involves the SEC or CFTC, and the ability to search terms.[9]

In June 2021, the firm announced the election of Elizabeth Lan Davis as its chair and president. Davis succeeded firm co-founder James Murphy, who served in those roles since the firm began in 2010. Davis' election was conducted by a shareholder vote on June 25. Her term will begin on September 1, 2021. [10]
