NYSE American Options (formerly NYSE Amex Options), owned by IntercontinentalExchange Group since November 2013, is a US options exchange that trades options on US-listed stocks, American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), broad-based, industry sector and international indexes, exchange traded funds (ETFs), and HOLDRS. In addition to conventional options, it also trades LEAPS and equity and index FLEX options. [1]
The exchange is one of two equity options markets under the ICE umbrella. The other is the all-electronic options market NYSE Arca Options. Both exchanges are accessible through a single technology platform. NYSE American Options is also complemented by three securities markets, also owned by ICE, New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Arca and NYSE MKT, formerly (NYSE AMEX or the American Stock Exchange.
NYSE American Options uses a customer priority and size pro-rata allocation model.[2]
History[edit]
NYSE Group merged with Euronext to become NYSE Euronext in April 2007, and NYSE Amex Options was formed when NYSE Euronext acquired the American Stock Exchange (Amex) in January 2008 to expand its U.S. options business. The merger agreement was approved by The Amex Membership Corporation on June 17, 2008.[3]
NYSE Amex Options completed its transition to the exchange's new trading floor, located at 11 Wall St, in March 2009. The new facility was adjacent to the New York Stock Exchange equities trading floor and was composed of two adjoining rooms with new trading pits. As part of the transition, NYSE finished moving about 300 traders and floor officials from the Amex building to the New York Stock Exchange.[4]
The exchange said NYSE Amex Options trading community and customers would benefit from enhanced speed, order executions and capacity improvements of NYSE Arca technology.[5]
In 2010 NYSE Euronext completed the migration of the NYSE Arca equities and options markets and the NYSE Amex Options market to its Universal Trading Platform. The same year, NYSE Euronext sold a significant equity interest in NYSE Amex Options to seven external investors, BofA Merrill Lynch, Barclays Capital, Citadel Securities, Citi, Goldman Sachs, TD AMERITRADE and UBS. NYSE Euronext remained the largest shareholder in the entity and managed NYSE Amex Options' the day-to-day operations. [6]
In November 2013, ICE purchased NYSE Euronext for $11 billion, acquiring NYSE Amex Options as well as NYSE Arca Options and three US stock exchanges, New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Arca and NYSE MKT, along with European exchanges some of which were later spun off, and a derivatives exchange that was rolled into ICE Futures Europe.[7][8]
