The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) used to be an independent entity within the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It was responsible for ensuring the stability, liquidity, and affordability of the US mortgage market through oversight of two housing government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - which together own and/or secure more than 70% of residential mortgage loans in the United States.[1]
On July 30, 2008, it was incorporated into the newly-created Federal Housing Finance Agency.[2]
